Guanacaste's Player of the Year 2010

Follow the development in the quest for the GPOY title throughout 2010

GPOY 2010 - here is how it works:

This prestigious title will be awarded to the player who manages to score the most points during the season of 2010.

For every tournament that counts, $4 will go to the GPOY cash prizes:

Player of the Year 50%
Runner-up            30%
third place            20%.

The points scored are calculated from a simple formula:
GPOY points = [number of players] * [finish factor] * [SQRT(length of tournament in hours)] * [buy-in factor]

Example: Steven Straight finishes 3rd at a TPT event with 32 players. He wins 13% of the prize pool, and the tournament lasted for 3 hours, breaks not included. Steven scores 32 * 13 * SQRT(3) * 1 = 720.53 GPOY points.

If you are hosting one or more tournaments and would like to offer the GPOY contest to your players, please contact Henrik at

Rules for the player of the year (adjusted July 8th):

1. All tournaments counting towards the GPOY must have a buy-in of 2,000 colones minimum

2. Satellites and qualifiers are regarded as separate tournaments, reporting and GPOY fee must be dealt with accordingly.

3. The TD is responsible for reporting the results within 2 weeks after finishing the tournament AND within the current month. Delayed reports risk not being included in the GPOY contest.

4. The TD will pay Henrik a fee of $5 per tournament, of which $4 go to form a cash prize for the winners of GPOY 2010.

5. Tournaments held in the calendar year of 2010 are eligible.

6. Eligible tournaments be published minimum 3 days prior to the event either by email to the poker community or by public advertisement. Tournaments that are a part of a regular schedule (TPT and other tournament series) do not need special advertisement.

7. Tournaments must have a minimum of 3 players.

8. TD´s certified are Mike and Wendy Clifford, Rick Nicastro, Jeff Herrman and Henrik Bodholdt.

9. The formula for computing GPOY points is [# of players] * [Placement Factor] * [v(hours of play)] * [buy-in factor].
When indicating the hours, round up to nearest full hour, i.e. if a tournament has lasted for 2 hours and 20 minutes net (remember to subtract breaks) “3 hours” should be reported.

10. Henrik will publish a running update of the GPOY standings on www.costaricapoker.org and by emails.

11. Games allowed are Texas Limit and NL Hold’em, Crazy Pineapple, Omaha Hi-Lo and Omaha High, Limit, NL and Pot Limit, 7-card Stud, incl. Razz and Eight-or-Better (all limit) as well as H.O.R.S.E. events with mixed games.

12. Buy.in factor (including re-buys and add-ons, average of the field):
$1-99: 1
$100-399: 2
$400-?: 3

Exceptions: The TOC and the 3 Kings Poker League Final Table will be categorized as level 3.

13. Placement Factor. In regular tourneys with a gradual decline in pay-outs (recommendations in parenthesis):
2 places paid    (6-14 players)      70/30
3 places paid    (15-19 players)    55/30/15
4 places paid    (20-24 players)    50/25/15/10
5 places paid    (25-29 players)    45/23/15/10/7
6 places paid    (30-34 players)    42/22/14/10/7/5
7 places paid    (35-39 players)    38/20/13/10/8/6/5
8 places paid    (40-44 players)    34/17/13/10/8/7/6/5

Exceptions:
The 3 Kings Poker League Final Table will award points for the top 3: 55/30/15%

14. In satellite and qualifying tournaments the following rules apply:
a. If only one player gets rewarded, he will get 100% of the GPOY points
b. If the pay-out structure is flat, i.e. satellites w/re-buys with two or more players qualifying, they will share the GPOY points equally.
Example: In a WSOP Challenge satellite 3 players get awarded a seat worth $130, while a 4th player receives $50. In this case the prize distribution applied will be 29.6/29.6/29.6/11.2.

15. If splits/deals/hedging or other financial agreements are made before a tournament has been concluded, the tournament will still have to be played to the end in order for the winners to receive their GPOY points.
